Why would I choose an aluminum compressed air system over black iron?
Aluminum is highly corrosion-resistant, lightweight and easy to install. Compressed air always carries moisture, and moisture makes metal pipe oxidize. Steel forms rust (iron oxide), which is porous and flaky. It keeps peeling away and exposing fresh metal, so the corrosion never stops. That rust narrows the pipe, causes pressure drop, and sends debris into your filters, tools and finishes. Aluminum forms aluminum oxide, a thin, hard layer that bonds tightly to the surface, seals the metal and stops further corrosion. The result is clean air, steady pressure and lower energy costs for the life of your system.
How does the installation process work with aluminum pipe and fittings?
Installing aluminum pipe and fittings is significantly faster and easier
than traditional threaded steel or copper. Aluminum systems utilize modular
compression fittings or push-to-connect technology, requiring no threading,
welding, or soldering. Each brand varies slightly on their installation
processes but the install is quite simple across the board.
How does the weight of aluminum pipe compare to other materials for compressed air systems?
Aluminum piping is extremely light. An 18’ long stick of 1” aluminum pipe
weighs roughly 3 lbs. For the same material in SCH40 black iron or copper, about
30 lbs. 10x the weight! Installing a lighter system will help keep the load off of
your roof, save time on the installation, and decrease safety risk during
installation.
Does aluminum piping for compressed air provide a cleaner system?
Yes. Unlike black iron or steel pipes—which rust, scale, and flake over
time—aluminum is corrosion-resistant. Clean, dry air flows directly to your
equipment, protecting sensitive tools and air systems from contamination.
Can I easily modify or expand my aluminum compressed piping system in the future?
Absolutely. Thanks to its modular design, you can easily disconnect
fittings, add new drop lines, or reconfigure the entire layout with basic hand
tools without cutting, threading, or replacing existing pipe sections.
Do I need specialized tools or technical expertise to assemble aluminum piping for compressed air or gas?
No specialized heavy machinery or certified piping expertise is required.
Standard pipe cutters, deburring tools, and simple wrenches are usually all you
need to achieve a secure, professional, leak-proof seal.
Where can I get trained on installing aluminum piping systems?
While aluminum piping does not require special training or certifications, we always recommend familiarizing yourself with the best practices for installation. Working with pressurized systems is serious work.
We have a team of compressed air experts who would love to come train you and
your team on installing an aluminum system. Please email us for more info, info@airpipingdirect.com
What do the different aluminum pipe colors signify for my air lines?
While standard aluminum pipe is identical in pressure rating, temperature
rating, and certifications, pipe colors help identify the what is flowing
through your lines.
- Blue: Compressed Air
- Green: Inert Gases (Nitrogen, Argon)
- Gray: Vacuum or specialty gas lines
You can always install any color and apply pipe labels as identifying
markers for the commodity in that line.
